California - Whale Watching

Tuesday afternoon we decided on a whim to call and see if there were any spots on a whale-watching tour. We had heard there were tons of whales in the bay, and we couldn't resist the chance to see them. Amazingly there were 10 spots on an afternoon trip! Our tour left a little late because there was a news crew on the morning tour, and they were getting such amazing footage of the whales that it was taking longer than expected. At breakfast a couple days later we actually saw the footage on the news!

Before even getting on the boat, we got to see a huge group of sea lions, and even some jellyfish. I had never seen such big jellyfish just floating through the harbor.

It was hard to capture on film, but there were so many whales, and they were so close to the boat. I ended up spending a lot of the trip inside the cabin with Juliet (she had skipped her nap and was really tired) but the whole time we were on the water, we were seeing breach after breach. It was unbelievable!

This is what you saw each time a group
of whales was about to surface - dozens of sea lions!!

Juliet fell asleep towards the end of the trip. It was sweet to snuggle, but you can see I missed a pretty spectacular sunset as we headed back to shore!
